We have planned to celebrate some of our partners’ festivals as part of The Comenius project to learn about their traditions and customs that are related to our countries. We started with a British festival called Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night. It is celebrated on 5th November to commemorate unsuccessful plot against king James I. On this day a group of plotters tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and the king with gunpowder. Today the English have big bonfires throughout the country, they organize picnics and have firework displays. Children prepare big dolls, dress them in old clothes and then walk the streets carrying the “guys” and shouting “A penny for the guy”! Food is an important element of Bonfire Night. People cook potatoes in the bonfire. They are called “jacket potatoes”. Toffee apples are also popular. On 5th November 2007 a group of children from class 5 under a supervision of the teacher of English - Sylwia Romanowska – made a short presentation to all our school pupils concerning the British festival, its traditions and ways of celebrating it in Britain. At the end of the presentation each class got a puppet of a“guy” and a British flag.

On Thursday 6th December 2007 Santa Claus with an Angel came to our school. Children from 1-3classes had been waiting for a few days for the unusual guest but they did not expect to see him so early in the morning and even at school! Santa had to explain why he came so early and promised to come again in the evening to their homes and bring them presents they had asked for in their letters.
During the meeting in classes Santa Claus had to answer a lot of inquiring questions and when he answered all of them it came the time to give small presents. Smiles on the faces and red cheeks were the evidence for high emotions which will stay in children’s minds for a long time.
